Only 3 hours by flight from the UK, the High Atlas mountains near Marrakech offer some of the most spectacular treks in the world. This 5-day trek takes us through a variety of landscapes, from lush valleys to barren rocks. We’ll traverse colorful Berber villages, crossing mountain passes that slowly ascend to our highest point at 4,167m at the summit of Mount Toubkal, the highest mountain in North Africa.
Early morning departure from Marrakech for a scenic drive south, winding through the Moulay Brahim gorges and upper valleys. Arrival at the higher foothills of the western High Atlas mountains and our trailhead at Imi Oughlad (1450m). Meeting with the Berber muleteer crew. 2-hour acclimatization hike on winding mule trails, passing through cornfields, woods, pine, and juniper trees to Tizi n'Tachete (2000m). Overnight stay in our bivouac/guesthouse at Tiziane (1750m).
After breakfast, hike along the Assif n'Ait Oussaden valley, passing through walnut groves, to Tizi n'Taghrhourte (1995m). Picnic stop in the midst of impressive silence after approximately 2.5 hours of relatively easy walking. Afternoon hike along the forest edges to the Berber village of D'knt (1870m). Overnight stay in a bivouac/guesthouse.
Morning hike of 3 hours through walnut groves, corn, and barley fields. Crossing Tizi n'Tagdalte to descend among juniper trees to a small spring situated among the trees. Picnic and descent on winding trails on upper slopes for approximately 3 hours to arrive at a small river at the beginning of the Assif n'Ait Oussaden valley. Arrival at the village of Tizi Oussem (1850m) and then to the summer village of Tamsoult for our campsite/hut.
Moderately challenging hike on winding mule trails to Tizi Aguelzim (3550m). Additional 3 hours to the south-east to the Toubkal refuge, marking the limit of spring snow at 3207m. Dinner in bivouac around the refuge.
Very early breakfast to depart at 6 am and reach the highest summit of the Maghreb (4167m). Breathtaking panorama. Easy descent to the refuge for a picnic. After lunch, descent to the Sidi Chamharouch sanctuary and the village of Imlil. Transfer back to Marrakech.
